Fleetwood's Memorial Park

We're bringing this Grade II listed First World War Memorial Park to life with a comprehensive restoration thanks to £2.4m funding from the Heritage and Big Lottery Funds.

Designed and built in 1925 by renowned town planner Sir Patrick Abercrombie, the park is unique in that the entire grounds were created in commemoration of the First World War, unlike most conventional architectural memorials, and it is one of only four listed war memorial parks and gardens in the country

Essential conservation work is being carried out including restoration of the war memorial, entrances, lily pond (a favourite with the kids), pathways and pavilion; there's new seating, lighting and places to picnic; and we're creating a greater range of sports and play facilities including a multi-use games area and Parkour equipment alongside the traditional bowling greens and tennis courts.

Now is the time to discover (or rediscover if it's a while since you visited) this wonderful park that lies in the heart of Fleetwood town. It's steeped in local history and tells the story of Fleetwood and its people in every feature, from the original trees planted by local children who lost their fathers in the First World War to the sailor plaque on the main entrance gates that symbolises the town's naval role during the war and heavy loss endured by the community as a result of the many trawlers lost at sea.

The park is home to a variety of wildlife from the plants that colour the park throughout the seasons and the ducks that inhabit the lily pond to the species that live below the water and the birds, bats and bees in the trees above.

The park remains open throughout the restoration work and is due to be finished in summer 2015.
