Coastal Contrasts

“I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide, Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied; And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying, And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.”
(John Masefield)

Eleven miles of striking coastline, with contrasting rugged wildness and soft, sandy beaches - Wyre boasts of its rich maritime history and the renaissance of its seaside resorts, which nestle upon the imposing expanse of Morecambe Bay.

Visit in summer and enjoy the busy beaches, walk along the promenades and gaze across the sparkling waters of Morecambe Bay toward the fells of the Lake District and beyond. Visit in Winter, wrap up warm and stroll along those same promenades to find yourself in a haven of serenity as the gulls wheel overhead and the fishing boats brave the seas to bring home the freshest catch of the day.

Like shopping? Well, Fleetwood and Cleveleys are both traditional seaside resorts, which have grown into popular shopping destinations, and which can offer some of the best bargains around.

Fleetwood offers its busy time-honoured market- a popular spot to shop, then there is contemporary Freeport, with a great selection of well-known brand named shops offering substantial discounts, Lord Street too is packed with a great collection of shops and stores. Cleveleys, never to be outshone, can also offer a huge range of shops and bargains along Victoria Road, which stretches toward the sea.

Take a ride along the sea front on one of the few remaining traditional road tramways, build sandcastles with the children or take in a show at the Marine Hall. Visit Jubilee Gardens or just sit and watch the migrating birds reach our shore from distant lands. The coastline of Wyre is rich and varied all the year round and will grace you with its mix of the traditional and the contemporary.

So roll up your trouser legs and get sand between your toes to enjoy the place where land and sea meet.
