Heritage Open Days celebrates England’s fantastic architecture and culture.
Every year on four days in September, buildings of every age, style and function throw open their doors free of charge. It is a once-a-year chance to discover hidden architectural treasures and enjoy a wide range of tours, events and activities which bring to life local history and culture.
This year’s event takes place from Thursday 6 to Sunday 9 September and here are some of the great events taking place in Wyre to celebrate.
*NEW for 2012* Fleetwood Cemetery History Walks
Thursday 6 September. 10am – noon.
WHERE: Fleetwood Cemetery. PRICE: Free.
A chance to find out about the heritage of the cemetery.
Autumn at Broadwater Wood
Thursday 6 September. 2pm – 3pm.
WHERE: Fleetwood area. PRICE: Free.
A short walk for a potted history of the wood and a look at how the woodland is being managed for wildlife. BOOKING ESSENTIAL.
Night Time Explorer
Thursday 6 September. 7.30pm – 9.30pm.
WHERE: Thornton. PRICE: £3/£2.
A family event with an opportunity to discover nocturnal wildlife in the Thornton area. BOOKING ESSENTIAL.
*NEW for 2012* Heritage Open Days Sea Change Exhibition
Friday 7 – Sunday 9 September. 11am– 4pm.
WHERE: Marine Hall, Fleetwood. PRICE: Free.
Visit the Marine Hall to find out about the Sea Change project along Fleetwood and Cleveleys coast line. Find out about the history of the project and the shared stories. Highlights include Rossall Point Tower, Marine Hall Gardens, the new public artwork installations and Sea Swallow book.
*NEW for 2012* Memorial Park Heritage Walk
Saturday 8 September. 2pm – 3pm.
WHERE: Memorial Park, Fleetwood. PRICE: Free.
Join the Wyre Parks and Ranger teams and Memorial Park Friends Group for a short walk discovering the history of this Grade II listed park.
Bowland Heritage Classic Tour
Saturday 8 September. 9.30am – 4pm.
WHERE: Garstang. PRICE: £16.
A fantastic chance to discover some of Bowland's heritage – both built and natural. Step back in time as we climb aboard one of Cumbria Classic Coaches' wonderful vintage vehicles for a journey around the west of the AONB. We will be stopping off at a number of locations along the way - some of which are not normally open to the public - to find out a little bit more about their place in history. Bring along a packed lunch, waterproofs and strong shoes. Some walking involved. A second tour is planned for the 9th September from Clitheroe. Booking essential. Booking and deposit by 24 August. Tours of Marsh Mill Windmill, Thornton
Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 September. 10.30am – 4.30pm.
WHERE: Marsh Mill Windmill, Thornton. PRICE: Free.
Marsh Mill is a restored Tower Mill, one of the best in the UK with original machinery. It offers a unique introduction to milling of a bygone age through this guided tour to the top. Hard Hats at the ready. Call 01253 887445 for further details.
The Bronze Age Circle - Bleasdale
Sunday 9 September. 1pm - 5pm.
WHERE: Bleasdale area. PRICE: £3/£2.
A walk around Bleasdale including St Eadmer’s Church and Bleasdale Circle. Enjoy an exhibition of local history followed by tea and cakes (extra charge). BOOKING ESSENTIAL.
