Ceramic artist Louise Wood is starting her residency at The Mount, Fleetwood, with a series of activity days and drop-in workshops.
Commissioned by Wyre Council, Louise will spend the next few months creating ten hand-sized sculptures to reflect the ten sides of the building, each of which will tell different stories of Fleetwood’s maritime heritage and go on a journey before returning to the town.
During an initial open day from 1pm to 4pm on Saturday 9 April, members of the public can explore the workings of the clock donated by Isaac Spencer, share stories of Fleetwood’s history and find out more about the project.
Then on Tuesday 12 April the first drop-in pottery workshop is being held between 1 and 3pm. This workshop is free and no experience of working in clay is necessary. People taking part can take along photos or drawings to transfer on to the clay, to make memory tokens to take home.
Similar sessions will be held throughout April and May. All the holdable objects being made throughout the residency will be sculpted using clay and will be embedded with words of local people, for other members of the community to read. Louise’s sculptures also open up, having removable sections or drawers where further local memories can be unravelled and read.
And she is also looking for a theme for the 10th sculpture. Is there an important aspect of Fleetwood’s maritime history you feel is neglected? Would you like to see a sculpture telling stories about boat building, vessels involved in gas rig support, or underwater exploration?
If so, she is keen to hear from you via email: [email protected] or on 07719 671014.
