Thornton and Cleveleys
Take a ride along the sea front on one of the few remaining traditional road tramways, build sandcastles with the children, visit Jubilee Gardens or just sit and watch the migrating birds reach our shore from distant lands.
Visit the seafront at Cleveleys, which has just received a major facelift. There is a new leisure development, which includes places to eat and a cinema. Enjoy the public artworks, part of the stylish new promenade areas. Jubilee Gardens has also undergone a complete transformation and there will be a new programme of events taking place on the seafront.
Thornton is home to Marsh Mill Windmill, a lovingly restored, fully working mill, which also serves as a visitor and heritage centre, the Thornton Little Theatre and the Green Flag awarded Wyre Estuary Country Park, which is a wonderful place to take the children. Fully accessible, the park and visitor centre offer an opportunity to buy refreshments, walk along the network of footpaths or sit and watch the wildlife alongside the jet skis and boats making the most of the estuary.
The river is a great spot for anyone with an interest in migrating birds. It is also the gateway to the fabulous Morecambe Bay, an area so rich in marine and wildlife that it is classified as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Birds that you might see here include the oystercatcher, grey plover, pink-footed goose and the dunlin to name but a few.
The busy town of Cleveleys sprawls out towards the sea west of Thornton . Cleveleys has some of the best localised shopping in Wyre. The high street is filled with a range of stores, restaurants, and cafes.
Cleveleys has all the trimmings that make for the best traditional seaside holidays –with friendly hotels offering a warm welcome and a great destination for couples and families alike, just a short tram ride from Blackpool.
