In a bid to build on an already green ethos for business, Dewlay Cheesemakers near Garstang have installed a 126 metre wind turbine at the back of the cheese making site. The turbine is designed to reduce the company’s carbon emissions by 2,992 tonnes per year, making them a leading example for sustainable food production to businesses across the borough.
The huge turbine has become somewhat of a talking point as anybody making their way along the A6 can see the iconic shape for miles around.
At the official unveiling of the turbine Charles Hendry, Minister of State for Energy said,
“I applaud Dewlay for making the choice to generate green electricity and congratulate them on becoming one of the first cheesemakers in the UK to be powered by wind energy on this scale.
“People will ask what makes Garstang Blue so green. And while ‘green’ cheese has always been considered as one of those things that will never happen, after this visit I can now say that Dewlay lays claim to this feat!”
Dewlay also ran a competition at local schools for the wind turbines official name and the winner, local schoolgirl, Faith Anderson, 8, from St. Michael’s on Wyre CE Primary School came up with the winning name ‘Castle in the Clouds.’
